Change of Heart in the Heart of Texas

Last winter, while vacationing in South Padre Island, Texas, the air dryer in my 2000 Bounder motorhome failed and I was stuck at the campground. Good Sam Emergency Road Service towed my motorhome to Tire One Truck and Trailer Shop in Brownsville.

Tire One’s owner said he’d change the air dryer kit and the compressor kit and he gave me an estimate of $1,200. I authorized the repairs and left with the Bounder later that day.

A week later, I was in Georgia and my problem came back to haunt me. No air pressure! I took it to another service shop and was told that the purge valve that Tire One installed as part of the repairs was faulty. That mechanic didn’t have the part for the repairs, so he bypassed the air dryer so I could be on my way and have the repairs made when I got back to Canada.

I later had the problem checked by two different Freightliner dealerships. I was told that I shouldn’t have had the purge valve changed to begin with. Instead, the mechanics should have changed the air dryer altogether, because corrosion or wear in the air dryer could cause the purge valve to malfunction. I finally had the air dryer changed and it cost me a lot less than Tire One charged me. I sent Tire One copies of all the bills for the expenses I’d incurred. The total amount was $568.59. Tire One agreed to send me $300 as a good faith gesture. However, it’s been over a month now and I haven’t received anything. They won’t return my phone calls or e-mails.

I feel that Tire One should assume responsibility for the poor work. I also feel I was grossly overcharged, because I could have had a new air dryer installed for less than I paid. I’m not asking that they refund the $1227.83 that I paid. I agreed to that amount and I accept that.  However, I feel that I should be reimbursed for the $568.59 that I had to pay to correct their mistakes.

Last winter, we were down in Texas again and, just for the fun of it, I dropped by Tire One to ask the owner if he remembered me.  It took a while, but finally he admitted that he’d forgotten to send me the check he’d promised. He then immediately wrote me a check for $300. It doesn’t cover all of the expenses I had, but at least it’s something. I’m not sure if the Action Line letter had anything to do with his change of heart, but I did want to thank you for your help.

    My wife and I had been looking for a class A to replace our travel trailer for a while. We found a lot on Craig list from dealers, to scams and finally found one in the L A area.
    First the scam was unreal. I sent an e-mail that was never answered until later. Then my wife sent an e-mail and she got an response. Which read. Do to our daughters resent death with need to sell to pay taxes and medical bills we live in Montana. My wife sent another and said we are retired and would fly up check it out and pay cash for the unit. They were wanting us to pay though e-bay with a paypal account. Needless to say that conversation stopped. Then they contacted me not knowing we were married and told me an entirely different story. They were in the Gulf coast area of the oil spill and they were needing money so they could move to another job offer. I turned this all over to The FBI and I still have not heard anything from them.
    Next we traveled 250 miles to check out a class A in LA area. We liked the unit they swore there was nothing wrong with this coach except the tv antenna. We wrote out a check $$$$. Then left went back home and told them we would be back the next weekend after the check cleared to pick it up. We arrived on said date and they had cleaned all the stuff out and had it washed. We left on our way back north to the house and decided to stay over at a camp ground when we started checking things out a little bit closer. Oop’s on the way the generator quits. The A/C units shut down. What have I bought? The people had put new tires, batteries and serviced and a bill showing $3,000.00 worth of work done just so their son could take it across to Vegas. While on the way the transmission messed up and they had a $500.00 repair bill that I found in the glove box showing this repair that we were unaware of. But that’s ok. It’s fixed. I hope. That same day at the park we noticed a couple of wet spots in the front. Yep you right water damage. They had the unit park in storage for 2 years then took it out for the trip payed for the smog and tag and parked it at home with it slanted down wards with the rear up and the front down. That’s where all the water ran when it was washed. I don’t know if the people lied straight out to me but they wrote AS Is in big letters when we got the bill of sale.
    We have now just spent $7,000.00 for the roof and getting it resealed and a couple of other things on it the first week and the generator has yet to be repaired from being shorted out in the electrical system.
    I was told a long time ago you learn from our mistakes and I guess I have not learned nothing yet. I have a good heart and I find myself being taken advange of my people you want to trust. Now that I have blown off steam. Ya’ll have great day and enjoy life be careful what you buy from strangers.
