Baileys Grove Campground

Where to stay on Wisconsin’s Door County Peninsula
Good Sam members with long RVs don’t need to lie awake at night worrying about whether they can back out of their campsite at Baileys Grove Campground. The developers of the Good Sam Park in Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, thoughtfully plotted 45 pull-throughs among the 95 RV sites.
In 2007, Josh and Alicia Kropuenske bought the big-rig friendly campground from Josh’s father, Elwyn, who had purchased it in 2001. “As a child living in Minnesota,” says Josh, “I vacationed in Door County every summer and actually stayed at this campground back when the trees were little.”
Now that the trees provide plenty of shade, the Kropuenskes keep them neatly trimmed so overhead clearance isn’t a problem for RVs, big or small. It’s that kind of attention to detail that helped earn the 36-year-old campground a 9/10*/10 rating in the 2012 Trailer Life Directory and inclusion in the Big Rigs Best Bets
Baileys Grove is a true family affair, with Elwyn and his wife, Leann, helping out during peak season, and Josh and Alicia’s sons Tyler, 13, and Ryan, 11, both lending a hand. “My wife and I love working together,” says Josh, “and it’s fun to see the boys get more involved each year.”
The Kropuenskes go to great lengths to make sure Baileys Cove greets everyone with the same warm welcome, from retired couples to young families to canine companions. “We pride ourselves on being a quiet, dog-friendly and family-friendly park,” says Josh.
Guests can make a splash in the recently retiled outdoor pool and work up a sweat at the basketball court. Kids have fun at the new playground and the game room. A laundry room, clean restrooms and free Wi-Fi round out the conveniences. “We’re constantly tweaking the wireless network to optimize speed and coverage,” assures Josh.
Known as the Cape Cod of the Midwest, Door County entices visitors to spend their days exploring the beautiful coastline and hiking and biking the peninsula’s trails. Because the campground empties out during the day, the Kropuenskes don’t schedule as many on-site activities as some Good Sam Parks, although they make sure to host holiday events and
Baileys Cove sits less than a mile from Lake Michigan, and guests can launch a boat, rent a slip or set out on a charter fishing excursion from Baileys Harbor. “We have lots of campers who come just for the fishing, bringing their own boats or going on one of the many charters in town,” says Josh. After fishing, guests converge at the campground’s state-of-the-art fish cleaning station to prepare their catch of the day.
The Kropuenskes are proud of Baileys Cove Campground and invite Good Sam members to pay a visit. “We hope to be doing this for many years to come,” says Josh. To find out more about the top-rated Good Sam Park or to make a reservation, visit baileysgrovecampground.com .
