 Julie MacKinen of Battle Ground, Washington, contacted the Good Sam Club’s consumer advocacy program, Action Line, when her extended warranty failed to cover the full cost of fixing her RV’s air conditioner:

 After arriving home from a three-month RV tour, we were looking forward to getting our bedroom air conditioner repaired through our extended warranty. The air conditioner blew warm air, but fortunately the living room air conditioner still worked. We took the RV in for repairs at Camping World of Wood Village, Oregon, and were told the air-conditioning unit needed to be replaced.

Camping World called our extended warranty company, Interstate National, and was told to go ahead with the replacement. When Camping World ordered the part, they were advised that the model is no longer being manufactured. A different model was required along with a new circuit board as an interface to make it run. Camping World then passed this information on to Interstate and was told they wouldn’t cover the circuit board, as we didn’t have one before, and the costs were to be paid by us, an additional $179.

We’ve tried to explain to Interstate that the air conditioner won’t work without the circuit board and therefore should be included in the coverage. We’ve paid Camping World and are hoping that Interstate will reconsider and reimburse us for something that should have been a complete package.

After petitioning Interstate National Dealer Services on behalf of the MacKinens, Good Sam Action Line received the following reply from Grace Love in Interstate’s paralegal department:

We reviewed this matter and spoke with Mr. MacKinen yesterday to inform him that a check will be mailed to him for the $179 reimbursement.

Shortly after that, Action Line received the following thank-you note from Julie MacKinen:

I just wanted to let you know that your intervention with Interstate has resolved our claim, and they have quickly sent us a check for the circuit board interface. So nice to have this forum to turn to when direct pleas fall on deaf ears! Thank you so much and glad you’re on our side!
